Iconic Sri Lankan bowler Lasith Malinga reflects on his career with words from Kumar Sangakkara, Asantha De Mel, Angelo Mathews and Nasser Hussain.

ICC World Cup 2019: Lasith Malinga became the third-highest wicket-taker of the showpiece event despite bowling an expensive spell against Virat Kohli-led side in Sri Lanka’s final World Cup match.

Legendary Sri Lankan speed merchant Lasith Malinga ended his World Cup career after playing his final match against India on Saturday in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019 hosted by England and Wales. Though Malinga failed to end up on the winning side in Sr Lanka’s last group game with the tournament favourites, he managed to take a bow by entering the history books for one last time in the gentlemen’s game. Malinga became the third-highest wicket-taker of the showpiece event despite bowling an expensive spell against Virat Kohli-led side in Sri Lanka’s final World Cup outing in the 12th edition of the showpiece event.

The 35-year-old bagged the crucial wicket of KL Rahul and leaked 82 runs in his final spell for the Lankan Lions in the limited-overs format. His solitary scalp of centurion Rahul was enough to make him become the new No. three in the list of highest takers in the history of the showpiece event. Malinga surpassed Pakistan great Wasim Akram, who was previously third in the elite list with 55 wickets.

Only his former Sri Lankan counterpart Muttiah Muralitharan and ex-Australian pacer Glenn  McGrath have managed to take more wickets than him in World Cup stage. Paying homage to Malinga as his World Cup career came to end in India’s seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka, here’s how Twitter saluted the legendary fast bowler from Colombo:

Playing his fourth and final World Cup for The Islanders in England and Wales, Malinga showcased series of match-winning performances in Sri Lanka’s group games with Afghanistan and England respectively. Playing his final game for the 1996 World Champions, Slinger Malinga failed to achieve another fruitful outing with the white ball as India eased past the Lankan Lions by 7 wickets.

Rohit Sharma masterclass and KL Rahul’s first World Cup century laid the foundation of a convincing win over Sri Lanka as India finish at the top of the points table with 15 points in nine matches. Malinga was congratulated by Indian captain Virat Kohli, who was seen walking up to the Sri Lankan pace great at the end of the match. Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya also greeted the legendary fast bowler at the end of the game. Pandya along with vice-captain Rohit and Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah also congratulated Malinga for a remarkable cricket career for The Islanders on social media as well.
